Nicolai

French perfumery, created with complete freedom.

NICOLAÏ Parfumeur-Créateur is an independent, family-run Parisian perfume house founded by renowned perfumer Patricia de Nicolaï, a descendant of the Guerlain family.

Every fragrance is composed by Patricia herself in her Paris laboratory and handcrafted in France, preserving a rare model in modern perfumery where the perfumer remains at the heart of both the house and its creations.

Founded in Paris in 1989 by Patricia de Nicolaï and her husband Jean-Louis Michau, NICOLAÏ was born from Patricia's desire for complete creative independence. A direct descendant of Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain, she grew up surrounded by one of French perfumery's great legacies before studying at ISIPCA in Versailles and developing a style distinctly her own. When she established NICOLAÏ, she became the first female perfumer to found her own fragrance house, at a time when independent niche perfumery was still in its infancy.
Patricia continues to personally create the house's formulas in her Paris laboratory, working with both exceptional natural materials and modern synthetics without relying on consumer testing or passing trends. The fragrances are then produced at NICOLAÏ's own facility in La Ferté-Saint-Aubin, where the house controls the process from maceration and filtration through hand filling, sealing, and packaging. That independence allows NICOLAÏ to operate more like an old-world perfumer's atelier than a modern fragrance corporation.
Today, NICOLAÏ remains a true family perfume house. Patricia's son Axel de Nicolaï joined the company in 2014 and now serves as CEO, while her daughter Edwige Michau de Nicolaï joined in 2024, carrying the house into its next generation. Patricia herself has been named a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur and served for 12 years as President of the Osmothèque, the international perfume conservatory. At its core, NICOLAÏ represents something increasingly rare: an independent French house where the founder, perfumer, family, and craft of making the fragrance remain intimately connected.
