Black Olive • Carnation • Latex

It begins where most scents step back. Ugo Charron pushes the indole in jasmine, sambac from India and grandiflorum from Egypt, until the white petal stops smelling like a flower and starts pulling like rubber. The latex accord is the whole point, not a gimmick bolted on after: it tightens, snaps back, then gets salted down under black olive while green olive cuts the edge raw. Feels like a hothouse after dark, air gone tight and elastic.

Turkish rose and carnation crowd in next, thickening the air until the room feels heavier than when you walked into it. Grasse hay warms underneath. Sandalwood threads through the dry-down without asking permission. Rum shows up last, dark and a little dangerous, like the floor of a room where photos get developed. By the end it sits somewhere between greenhouse and darkroom: glass gone warm in your hand, a night that keeps going and refuses to resolve.

Winner, Independent Category, The Art & Olfaction Awards 2026.

Somewhere south, late in August, you will eat outdoors after midnight. Jasmine spills over the wall behind the table; black olives glisten in a shallow dish; nobody suggests moving inside. The scent at your throat blurs into the garden until the guest beside you leans in, searching for the flower that blooms this late. There is no flower. It is you. The latex tethers the sweetness through the last bottle of wine, and the hay follows you home.
